LETTER FOR PUBLICATION
Dear Editor,
In your editorial "No more green posturing - the planet can't wait", you are
right to emphasise the urgent need to make deep cuts in CO2 emissions. But
there is very good evidence to show that you are quite wrong in your suggestion
that "Britain needs new nuclear power stations. This is the only way to provide
the volume of power that the country needs ..."
A recent report by professional engineers, commissioned by the German Government,
shows in great detail how Europe, including the UK, can generate all the
electricity it needs from renewable sources such as wind, waves and the sun,
can make deep cuts in CO2 emissions, and can phase out nuclear power at the same
time.
In the scenario described in this new "TRANS-CSP" report, which is in English and
can be downloaded from www.dlr.de/tt/trans-csp, the resilience and security of
electricity supplies will be increased by increasing the range of different
sources that we use and by reducing our reliance on imported sources of energy.
Far too many commentators are making assertions about future energy supplies
without the benefit of reliable evidence or thorough analysis. The TRANS-CSP
report plugs that gap.
Further information, and links to other sources of information, may be found
at www.trec-uk.org.uk.
Sincerely,
Gerry Wolff
